William Daroff Named CEO of Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations

The Druze Veterans community of Israel is thrilled that longtime friend William Daroff was named as CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations along side Vice Chairman Malcolm Hoenlein, who has shown love and support for Israel’s Druze throughout his term of 33 years.

Daroff currently serves as senior vice president for public policy and director of the Washington office of the Jewish Federations of North America.

Hoenlein, 74, announced in February 2018 that though he would step aside from day-to-day operations, he will remain with Conference to ensure a smooth transition, to be of counsel and to continue working on important projects to the Jewish community in the United States and Israel.

The Conference is a coalition of more than 50 Jewish organizations from across the ideological spectrum. The group’s purpose is to provide consensus on hot-button issues and in approaching the Executive Branch, and in doing so tends to reflect the positions of the Israeli government in power at the time.

Following is the official statement:

Statement by Arthur Stark, Chairman of the Conference of Presidents, on Appointment of New CEO, William Daroff

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations engaged in a lengthy and comprehensive search process since Malcolm Hoenlein announced his request to change his status at the Conference last year. In addition to hiring a highly respected search firm, members of the Search Committee and members of the Conference provided suggestions and recommendations of potential candidates, many of whom were interviewed. The process was conducted professionally and with integrity. Several candidates were invited back for the final rounds of interviews and the Search Committee came to a unanimous recommendation that William Daroff, Senior Vice President for Public Policy & Director of the Washington office of the JFNA, be selected and the members of the Executive Council unanimously endorsed the choice. William will be introduced at the general meeting of the Conference’s fifty three member agencies on September 9th. The transition will take place in early 2020 and Malcolm Hoenlein will remain as Vice Chairman thereafter, providing counsel and guidance, as well as leading special projects.

We are very excited to have a professional of William’s standing and capabilities to take on this important role. His many years of advocacy and bridge building uniquely qualify him to follow in Malcolm’s footsteps. With the professional leadership of William and Malcolm and the support of the member organizations we are confident the Conference will move ahead to greater heights as we work together to address the many challenges facing us at home and abroad.

Malcolm Hoenlein said: “I am delighted that this yearlong effort has produced a wonderful choice as Conference CEO. William has had many years of experience advocating Jewish interests and will bring that experience to his new position. I look forward to continuing to work with him in the years to come and building on the COP motto, ‘Strength Through Unity,’ which is more important than ever. Over these past 34 years I have seen the remarkable achievements of the Conference, largely unpublicized, and look to great things in the future.”

William Daroff said: “I am honored and humbled to be selected as CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Malcolm Hoenlein is a giant with a living legacy that is nothing short of historic. At such a challenging time in our community, I am awed by the broad strength and diversity of Jewish Americans. With all of our many accomplishments, moving forward there is also much work to be done together. Hazak hazak v’nitkhazek.”
